We are thrilled to name Niesha Johnson, 3rd Grade Teacher at Chabot Elementary in Oakland, as a 2020 Science Super Star!

During the life science unit of the year, Niesha and her students explored the life cycle, as well as the structures and functions of crayfish.

To elicit a general class discussion, and assess what her students already knew, they all completed the first two/thirds of a KWL (What I Know, What I Wonder, What I Learned) chart together. Many were curious about if crayfish live in places other than the United States. From there, Niesha helped them narrow their focus question to: How do crayfish structures and behaviors help them survive in the environment?

Her students observed their specimen, and to collect data they created their own charts and sketches.

As a thought experiment, they created their own crayfish, by speculating the characteristics that would be needed to live in other environments. They practiced language skills by writing on their models and posters, and after refining their knowledge, creating an oral presentation to share with the class.

Niesha's dedication to teaching engaging science has all the more meaning when she find students, who may not always be focused in lessons, thriving in science:

A student who has a particularly difficult time focusing, working, and sharing thoughts in other content areas is consistently highly engaged in science with the activities.
