October 2023
This Fall, the Bay Area Scientists Inspiring Students (BASIS) program is back in full swing and scientist teams are ready to bring new science explorations into classrooms to inspire the next generation of scientists. Already this year, UC Berkeley STEM role models have led more than 700 East Bay children in investigations to understand a range of science phenomena. Alongside experienced outreach presenters, dozens of new grad students, post docs, and undergraduates are eagerly signing up as BASIS presenters.
Elementary teachers are thrilled to have scientists coming to their classroom, engaging their students in active learning while also challenging preconceived ideas of who can be a scientist. Diverse, enthusiastic BASIS role models encourage young learners to view themselves as current and future scientists.
A first grade teacher in San Leandro remarked, “My students LOVED the team of scientists. It was especially endearing to see one of my students immediately connect with one of the presenters because they both wear hijabs. They really enjoyed the hands-on section of the lesson.” Meaningful moments of connection like this are why diverse role models are so important to CRS’ work in science outreach.
This Fall, we are also pairing Science Ambassadors to classrooms of teachers who earned Champions of Discovery recognition in Spring 2023. The Science Ambassadors will connect with a classroom over an entire semester, with 4 visits that will include hands-on experiments and activities, sharing about the Ambassador’s research and pathway into STEM, and having students present their research too.
“Teachers are always thrilled to see our scientists educate and spark students' interest in STEM. I’m excited to keep this momentum going!” says BASIS Program Manager, Kobe Nguyen.
