Kyyio Cecil-Raditz: Science at Point Bonita YMCA

September 2015

For this month’s spotlight, we’re introducing a community member that we admire for their commitment science education.  Kyyio Cecil-Raditz does it all! As Program Director of Point Bonita YMCA’s Outdoor Education and Wellness Program, Kyyio takes on many roles including hiring, mentoring, and supervising her naturalist staff, being a liaison to participating teachers, developing curriculum, writing grants, and even teaching in the field.

Ever since she was inspired to get involved in environmental issues is high school, Kyyio has had a deep passion for nature.  A science educator since 1998, Kyyio understands the importance of hands-on science. “Shifting from textbook teaching to hands-on experiences causes a monumental shift in the way students receive science. I love how getting students out in nature can provide them with opportunities to be really engaged in how life works!” says Kyyio.  Her favorite science teaching moments involve taking students to tidepools or doing stream/pond studies. She loves to watch students shift from thinking that bugs are gross to thinking “wow that is cool!” Kyyio especially enjoys how much fun her students have when they are outside interacting with nature directly.

Even when she’s not working or teaching, Kyyio likes to incorporate science into her daily activities. Hiking, walking trails, and baking gluten-free treats keeps Kyyio connected to her science roots!
