Joyful Math and Science Integration in the Classroom

The scientist visitors to our class today were so amazing! My students especially loved the hands-on activities, and meeting women who rock in science will be a memory they carry for a long time. I saw my students become inspired. They asked so many thoughtful questions too!

This school year, more than 75 teachers from across six East Bay school districts have been putting what they learned during last summer’s Joyful Math and Science training into practice in their classrooms.

Berkeley Scientists visit Oakland 4th graders.

Most are teachers of color and/or women, working in high need, historically marginalized communities, working to ensure that their students have opportunities to discover the science hiding in plain sight in their daily lives. They’ve explored light and shadows, sound waves, seed sprouting and plant growth, and much more.

Reading stories about diverse scientists, leading hands-on activities to discover the hidden power of magnets or designing a tool to remove trash from a creek, scientists have visited the classes too.

“This training helped me bring science to my students and school. I feel more comfortable teaching science now and I make it a priority,” said one teacher.
