Students admired the beautiful view of the Campanile in the Berkeley sunshine as they snacked, made new friends, and tinkered with a variety of BASIS science kits as examples of the activities they can bring into classrooms, including Simple Circuits, Build a Catapult, and Science Sketching.
CRS Board President and Professor of Chemistry Anne Baranger welcomed the grad students and undergrads, who came from across every STEM department and program and student organization on campus.
At this year’s Fall Kickoff, many first-time volunteers expressed their eagerness to begin community outreach, introduced themselves to seasoned scientist mentors, and asked questions about their classroom experiences.
“I’ve had my eye on the organization for a while. I’m really looking forward to participating and giving back to the community through science outreach” said Sebastian, a junior in Material Science and Engineering.
Sebastian and his new outreach teammates will have plenty of company, with nearly 700 UC Berkeley grad students, post docs, and undergrads making time to share their excitement about science and engineering with young learners in schools across the East Bay.
“With a goal to reach 500 classrooms this school year, we welcome every team, because every lesson adds up to a big impact for more than 12,000 children!,” said BASIS Program Manager Kobe Nguyen.
