Flipping the Script: 8th Graders are Judges in Reverse Science Fair

April 2023

Building on our successful Be a Scientist 7th grade STEM mentoring program in Berkeley schools, and our partnership with Lawrence Berkeley Lab, we’re excited to offer an innovative twist on the traditional science fair: adult scientists are the presenters, and 8th graders are the judges!

Launching this April at Willard Middle School, the Reverse Science Fair will allow students to learn from scientists about their cutting-edge scientific research and about interesting career pathways in STEM in an accessible and engaging format.

Students will move through the fair, interacting with professionals from across a wide range of disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology, earth and space science, and engineering. Scientists will share their pathways into science, and their research, including the questions they are trying to answer and how they conduct their research.

For the 8th graders, the Reverse Science Fair will build on their 7th grade Be a Scientist experience of having individual scientist coaches support their independent investigations. This year’s 7th graders, across all Berkeley middle schools, have worked with more than 130 UC Berkeley mentors to design and carry out experiments that involved launching bottle rockets, the aerodynamics of types of balls, observing caterpillar growth, and parachute drops.
