SPRING 2022

  • SESSIONS 5 – 8: TBD

Grade(s): 6th – 12th Grade Teachers
Credit: Teachers can enroll for one unit of Continuing Education credit from Dominican University after completion of the whole series
Presented By: Bay Area Science Project and the University of California at Berkeley, in partnership with Community Resources for Science

This webinar series is designed to help teachers use mapping tools to build spatial literacy, investigate environmental justice and design student-led action projects for the classroom, under the guidance of experts from UC Berkeley. Topics will include:

  • How to access and use ArcGIS Online and associated apps
  • Using and making maps to answer questions, visualize data, and make spatial inferences
  • Using ArcGIS story mapping to communicate ideas and information with maps, text, and images
  • How to gather and map your own environmental and social justice data
  • An exploration of implementation and action ideas with colleagues

This webinar series is made up of 8 consecutive and connected sessions, four (4) in Fall 2021 and four (4) in Spring 2022. Sessions will incorporate hands-on learning, strategies for classroom implementation and student action, and examples of maps, data sets and story maps.

Fall sessions will include guidance for accessing on-line ArcGIS tools, map making and visualization and analysis of spatial data; spring sessions will cover using and generating your own data, and using story maps to communicate findings, analyses and maps. Sessions will incorporate hands-on learning, strategies for classroom implementation and student action, and examples of maps, data sets, and story maps.

Fall 2021

  • SESSION 1 – 2: Explore student-designed research and story maps; introduction to spatial data and literacy; signing in and navigating ArcGIS, visualizing layers, finding patterns
  • SESSION 3 – 4: Making maps using ArcGIS – layering, asking questions, making inferences and looking for patterns

Spring 2022

  • SESSION 5 – 6: How to gather and use your own data to make maps and analyze patterns using Survey123
  • SESSION 7 – 8: Using StoryMaps to create interactive presentations to communicate ideas and projects

What Students Will Get Out Of It:
Taking what you learn into your classroom will help students learn how to use mapping tools to gather and visualize data, ask questions, and analyze patterns about environmental and social phenomena in local and relevant contexts. It will also provide valuable post secondary skills including ArcGIS tools and technology that are used in many science, social and business fields, critical thinking and analysis skills, use of data as basis for developing action projects, and knowledge of and confidence with computer technology.

Your Hosts:

  • Hana Moidu, PhD Candidate, Department of Environmental Science, Policy, Mgmt, UC Berkeley
  • Sarah Pedemonte, Learning and Teaching Group, The Lawrence, UC Berkeley
  • Betsy Mitchell, PhD, Science Content Specialist, UC Berkeley Natural Museums
  • Joanna Totino, Director Bay Area Science Project, The Lawrence, UC Berkeley

No prior experience required to participate.

Activities will use free online links but it is recommended to get an ArcGIS on-line public account if you do not already have an organizational account from your school/district. Individual accounts can be created here: https://tinyurl.com/ArcGISpublicaccount

For use in your classroom ArcGIS Education Account is strongly recommended. Check if your school has an educational license (search the map) and contact your administrators to inquire and get access here: https://tinyurl.com/USK12GIS

If your school does not have a license, consider registering for a free educational license (scroll down for form) here: https://tinyurl.com/ArcGISbundle
