PD: Climate Change Concepts
Climate Change Concepts for K-5
Workshop Date: September 24, 2020
Grades K-5
Presented By: Kate Gallagher, OUSD Environmental
& Helen Fitzmaurice, Climate Change Literacy Working Group
Although climate change does not explicitly appear in the NGSS until middle school, students learn about concepts that will help them understand it beginning in kindergarten. In this workshop, teachers experienced part of a climate-related elementary investigation and make connections to the NGSS, climate science, and citizen science opportunities at every elementary grade.
Kate Gallagher taught elementary grades in Oakland Unified for 20 years, including 7 years as a K-5 science prep teacher. She is an NGSS Early Implementer, a member of the OUSD Science Core Leadership Team, and a FOSS consultant.
Helen Fitzmaurice is a PhD Candidate in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at the University of California, Berkeley. She has been part of Community Resources for Science’s BASIS program and has done additional work with teachers in professional development workshops.
A professional learning certificate was provided for all attendees for each session.
This session will count as one hour and a half towards the 10 hours required in the 1 optional CEU available for this series.
