LANDING – CRS Volunteer Programs

Volunteers are central to our mission, serving as vibrant ambassadors of science and engineering in local classrooms throughout the Bay Area! Our volunteers motivate teachers to do more science and inspire students to envision themselves as scientists and engineers.

Community Resources for Science connects volunteers to classrooms and opportunities throughout the East Bay. We offer comprehensive training, coaching, and support to all of our volunteers. Check out all of our volunteer options!

Bay Area Scientists in Schools (BASIS)

BASIS volunteers bring engaging hands-on science experiments and engineering challenges into K-6 classrooms. BASIS volunteers receive comprehensive training in science communication, classroom management, and lesson plan development. Volunteers go into public elementary classrooms about once a month throughout Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, and Pinole. BASIS is flexible around your schedule! Learn more about our BASIS program.

Be A Scientist (BAS)

BAS volunteers coach middle school students through the steps of designing, conducting, and communicating about their own science investigations. Once per week over the course of a six-week session, BAS volunteers go into Berkeley middle school classrooms to provide individual support to students. Volunteers are trained to work with middle schoolers and teach the scientific method. Learn more about the Be A Scientist Program.

Corporate Volunteering

We work with private industries to involve their employees in sharing their talent and enthusiasm for science, engineering, technology and math! We provide training, lessons and materials for classroom visits, and handle all the logistics. Learn more about getting your company involved by emailing teach@crscience.org.

Additional Outreach Opportunities

Beyond the classroom, CRS presents science in a wide variety of settings around the Bay Area. From family science nights at schools to “pop up” science at farmers markets and street fairs, we’re always looking for enthusiastic STEM professionals to serve as role models, share science knowledge, and have fun! Learn more about our additional outreach opportunities.

It’s a win-win-win!

When you volunteer with Community Resources for Science, you have the chance to share your talent and passion for science and engineering, while developing your skills in science communicating. Students win too, as they learn and discover, and become inspired. And teachers benefit as they gain confidence and enthusiasm as they see how engaging hands-on science and engineering can be for all types of learners. Teachers tell us that our scientist and engineer volunteers are

“Exciting and engaging!”
“Inspiring!”
“Outstanding!”
“Amazing!”

Community Resources for Science enables hundreds of volunteers to engage with thousands of students in exciting, high-quality learning experiences each year throughout the Bay Area. This is thanks in large part to strong partnerships with scientists and engineers at the University of California-Berkeley, and employers such as Bayer and Clorox. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Cal Professor Robert Bergman, who brought BASIS to the College of Chemistry in 2001 and has since helped grow the program to include volunteers from over 25 campus science departments and student organizations.
