Congratulations to this year’s Science Super Stars!

“Lead with phenomena, include as much ‘hands-on’ learning as possible. Structure the work to provoke thoughtful discussions. Make lots of space in the class for conversations among the students. Push their thinking with your thoughtful questions and be sure to listen carefully to their ideas.” – Sue Jones, 3rd Grade Teacher, Bridges Academy

Teachers are too often unsung heroes, focused on the day-by-day work it takes to prepare each new generation for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

“I have several students who are very low academically. However, doing hands-on science lessons makes them feel engaged in learning and they enjoy learning in science.”

The CRS Science Super Star program is designed to shine a spotlight on teachers who ensure their students have rich, engaging science learning experiences. To earn recognition, we ask teachers to document aspects of their teaching, and then to reflect on how efforts to strengthen their own teaching practice has an impact on the students they teach.

Each year, we raise the bar, and each year the thoughtful reflections teachers share with us bring laughs, goose bumps, and tears of joy to our eyes. We dare you to reach these the profiles of this year’s honorees and not be inspired too! Our Science Super Star Honoree page has links to the profiles or enjoy this collection of wisdom gleaned from the submissions

“Take a risk, don’t be afraid to not know the answer or to not fully understand the concept. Be willing to learn with your students.” – Phoebe Diamond, 3rd Grade Teacher, Chabot Elementary

We’re delighted to recognize 84 teachers, including 70 from Oakland, 6 from West Contra Costa Unified, 7 from Berkeley Unified, and one from Fremont Unified
